Lot #1203A (04/08 Auction) - Important Only Known Brass Bradley Trout Reel
Important Only Known Example of a Brass W.H. Bradley Single Action Trout Size Reel. Willard H. Bradley, of New York, NY, was granted a U.S. patent for his "New and Useful Improvement in Fish-Line Reels" on September 22, 1868. While unmarked, it is unquestionable that this only known trout size example, with a 2 1/8" diameter spool and standing just 2 5/8" tall from the bottom of the foot to the top of the frame, is the work of W.H. Bradley. Discovered behind a wall by a carpenter, along with a small size hard rubber Alonzo Fowler side-mount fly reel, while remodeling a Connecticut estate, this unique reel exhibits several qualities associated with other Bradley reels. The donut shaped spool is supported by a one piece frame that incorporates the reel foot as well. Hand tooling marks are visible with a loop, consistent with the possibility that this was an early prototype of Bradley's work. This single action reel, only the second such Bradley known as other examples are all multipliers, features a crank handle (minus the grasp) secured to the spool shaft with a tiny knurled screw, supported by a brass handle brace. Bradley's patent displays a frame connection above the spool to allow for adjusting the tension between the spool ends and the spool journals. This example has a solid frame, most likely built before this improvement was implemented. Truly a little work of art, worthy of placement in any advanced fishing tackle collection, and in excellent condition. Enlarged View... |

Lot #1205A (04/08 Auction) - RARE Julius Vom Hofe Perforated Rim Trout Reel
The Most Sought After of All Julius Vom Hofe Reels is this German Silver and Hard Rubber Perforated Rim Trout Reel. Of the three listed sizes in the 1912 Julius Vom Hofe catalog, this size 3 example is smallest, with both the size 2 and size 1 being larger reels. This size #3 has a diameter of 2 3/8" and a 3/4" wide spool. The markings on the rear hard rubber plate are clearly visible, reading "Julius Vom Hofe, Pat. Oct. 8, 89, Brooklyn, NY". While perforated rim trout reels from Julius were only offered for a few years, the German Silver and Hard Rubber is only found in a few catalogs dating from 1911 to 1913. This example is returning to auction after years in a private collection, having been sold at an Oliver's auction years ago. With a rear click switch, removable rear bearing cap with correct washer, screw heads that show only slight use and blemish free hard rubber, this is the nicest size #3 example ever to come to auction, and grades a solid excellent. Lot #1537 (04/08 Auction) - Rare 8' Carlson "Steamer Special" Fly Rod
8' Carlson "Streamer Special" Trout Rod. This ultra rare 2/2, 6 sided rod is in excellent condition. Master rod maker, Sam Carlson, is noted for his exquisite 4 sided rods, but he occasionally deviated from his norm to produce equally wonderful hexagonal fly rods. This powerful trout rod features evenly flamed cane, bright nickel silver ferrules, a genuine agate stripper, brown wraps with double tipping (gold and black), and a lightweight aluminum screw down-locking reel seat with cork spacer. The tips are wrapped in tissue paper for protection. The butt section bears the following inscription in Carlson's own hand: Streamer Special Made by C.W. "Sam" Carlson. There is very light soiling on the cork handle and a tiny (1/8") dab of varnish on the butt section near the inscription. Otherwise this rod shows very little signs of use. All sections are full and straight. With the original bag and a grey anodized aluminum tube. Enlarged View... |
